Welcome to the sport of hockey! To become proficient at something, we need education; a testing platform to make mistakes; a teacher that can identify mistakes and provide solutions; an atmosphere that offers additional repetition; and most importantly, desire. Cool Kids Hockey Academy takes a different approach from most schools because it was designed around a concept we developed, that has proven to be successful. “Players that build a solid foundation of skating skills before building a solid foundation of individual hockey skills are better qualified and more successful than the majority of their peers when introduced to the sport of hockey.”
As parents, we don’t teach infants how to walk. First, an infant will hold onto an object and stand up. Once they have gained confidence they let go of the object, wobble, fall, crawl and try it again. After some repetition, your son or daughter went from standing to walking. To become a hockey player your child needs to learn how to run (not walk) on ice in every direction and we can’t teach them how to run on the ice, if we haven’t taught them how to walk on it.
We used this analogy as we designed each of our classes and lesson plans to develop a progressive program that teaches each player approximately 60 skills and more than 250 body movements through five simple classes. Doctor Hockey, Inc. has identified each of the skills needed, in sequential order, to make the transition from skater to player very simple. One of the best ways you can help your child is by bringing them to public skate so they can practice the skating skills they learn each week.
In 2010, USA Hockey said, "71% of four year olds, 51% of five year olds, 34% of six year olds and 23% of seven year olds were dropping out of hockey each year". More and more kids are going straght to Mites, without going through a program like Cool Kids Hockey Academy. Some may complete 1 learn to skate class (that mainly focuses on agaility and balance)and go straight to a team. While I don't want to discourage kids from having fun, I have to ask the question: "How much fun would you have if the puck was taken away from you by a faster skater every time you got it? How much fun would you have if you didn't know how to skate with a puck? How long would you stay at your job if a lack of training from management prevented you from EVER being qualified for a promotion?" The fact is, you don't need to be the best at something to have fun doing it; all you need is a little coaching to develop confidence and the enjoyment will follow!
With a 98% retention rate, your son or daughter will master the skill of skating before learning each of the individual hockey skills needed to become a hockey player at Cool Kids Hockey Academy. We know most “kids just want to play hockey games” and our goal is to make that happen. The players who completed our program in the past ranked among the top 50% of their peers at team tryouts. What does this mean for you and your child? It means, not only will your child be playing hockey soon, they too will stand amongst the top of their peers!
